ANNOUNCING THE 2014 ALMA GRAND PRIX OF CYCLOCROSS p/b Eclipse Cycling
The first ever Alma Grand Prix of Cyclocross is slated to kick off the Michigan ‘cross season on Saturday, September 6. The new venue in Alma is an abandoned city property (formerly an airport that was retired in the early 1960′s) and is ripe for developing a great, euro-style cyclocross course. It is going to take a LOT of work in the coming months, but the end result will be a great course to anchor a great event. The City of Alma is excited about hosting the race, and that allows for some great possibilities!
The City of Alma has a handful of hotels and dining options available, as well as a 3.5 mile single track trail and is the start of 40-ish miles of rail trail, if you’re interested in making more of a trip out of the event. The downtown has a number of shops (including Terry’s Cycle) and the campus of Alma College is a great place to visit. Additionally, race day is also “Lucky McDuck” day in town, which is a fun festival that your kids would probably enjoy.
The Alma Brewing Company will be hosting an early number pick up at their new location in downtown Alma on Friday night, September 5. The course will be marked and ready by then, so plan on stopping in on Friday after work, hitting up a few laps, and grabbing a pint when you pick up your number(s).
Alma College is supporting this event and the alumni house is another possible option for housing in addition to local hotels. It’s a quick, 2-mile bike ride from their alumni house to the venue. The local hotels aren’t very far away either.
Eclipse Cycling is the title sponsor for this year’s race, and they will be providing winner’s jerseys for ALL categories this year (not just the elite men and women)! Mountain Khakis is once again sponsoring both women’s categories – they are fantastic.
